Central Vietnam braces for heavy rains as Typhoon Kajiki nears

Heavy rains have started ravaging many areas in the central provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Tri ahead of Typhoon Kajiki.

Downpours have hit the Cua Lo Beach area, Trung Loc Commune and Thanh Vinh Ward in Nghe An since early this morning.

Heavy rains and strong gusts hit Trung Loc Commune in Nghe An, where local forces are moving remaining boat dwellers to safe shelters.

By 5 am on August 25, heavy rains had begun in Quang Tri Province, while strong, whistling winds battered coastal communes such as Hoa Trach and Phu Trach.

Downpours and violent winds also swept Ha Tinh, where a downed power line on Road 27 in Thach Lac Commune blocked traffic and left vehicles struggling to pass.

By 9 am, heavy rains and strengthening winds had begun in Nghi Son Ward, Thanh Hoa Province.

At around 9.15 am, heavy downpours swept through Thanh Vinh, Vinh Hung, Vinh Phu, Truong Vinh and Vinh Loc wards in Nghe An.

Torrential rains of 100-250 mm are expected to occur from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue on August 25-26.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep said that as of 6 am today, 9,820 households with 29,753 people in provinces from Ninh Binh to Thua Thien-Hue had been evacuated. The relocations have continued in high-risk areas.

Authorities of Nghe An evacuated hundreds of residents from deteriorated apartment blocks in Thanh Vinh Ward overnight on August 24.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that at 9 am, Typhoon Kajiki had sustained winds of 134-166 kph (levels 13-14) with gusts up to level 16. The storm was located about 140 km east-southeast of Nghe An, 120 km east of Ha Tinh, and 140 km east-northeast of the north of Quang Tri.
