The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said rainfall totals from southern Quang Tri Province to Khanh Hoa Province are likely to range from 150 to 300 mm between the night of November 15 and November 18, with some locations topping 400 mm.

The heaviest rain is expected in Hue, Danang, eastern parts of Quang Ngai Province and Gia Lai Province, where totals are forecast at 250 to 500 mm, locally over 700 mm.

Intense downpours of more than 200 mm in three hours could trigger urban flooding and inundation in low-lying areas, as well as landslides and flash floods in upland regions.

Forecasters expect rain to continue after November 19 in Danang and the eastern parts of provinces from Quang Ngai to Khanh Hoa. The warning notes a high risk of flooding in low-lying, urban and industrial areas, flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes.

Since October, central Vietnam has faced repeated heavy rains that have caused widespread flooding. From October 23 to November 3, cumulative rainfall commonly reached 500 to 800 mm, with some places exceeding 1,000 mm.

Hue and Danang in particular saw more than 1,500 mm of rain, including 1,755 mm in A Luoi in Hue, 2,452 mm in Nam Dong in Hue and 2,061 mm in Tra My in Danang.

At the same time, another surge of cold air is expected to push southwards from the night of November 13 to 15, sharply lowering temperatures in the northern region, Thanh Hoa Province and Nghe An Province. Readings there are forecast to fall to around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, with some northern mountainous areas dropping below 13 degrees.

Nights and early mornings in these areas will feel cold, and some high mountain locations are likely to experience harsh cold conditions.
