The Ministry of Construction has approved the airport's development plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
By 2030, the airport is expected to handle 19 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo annually, with facilities capable of serving wide-body aircraft including the Boeing 747, Boeing 777, Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.

To support future growth, a new 3,350-metre runway will be built alongside the existing runway, while aircraft parking capacity will expand to about 45 stands by 2030 and 70 by 2050.
The airport will also add a new T1 passenger terminal linked to the existing facility, while Terminal 2 will be expanded. A new cargo terminal with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes is also planned.
A key feature of the latest plan is a 1.6-hectare site allocated between Terminals 1 and 3 for a general aviation terminal serving private jets, business aircraft, helicopters and other specialised aviation services.
The airport's total land area is planned at about 628 hectares, with most of the site shared between civil and military aviation operations.
Total investment through 2050 is estimated at nearly VND 39.4 trillion, including more than VND 24.3 trillion for projects scheduled through 2030.
Cam Ranh airport handled about 9.75 million passengers in 2019 before traffic fell sharply during the Covid-19 pandemic. Passenger numbers recovered to about 7.2 million in 2025.
Under a conservative forecast, annual passenger traffic is expected to exceed 14 million by 2030, although planners have proposed a 19-million-passenger capacity to accommodate future growth.
