56 killed in New Year traffic accidents

As many as 155 traffic accidents occurred during the three-day New Year holiday that ended on Monday, killing 56 people and injuring 131 others.

As many as 155 traffic accidents occurred during the three-day New Year holiday that ended on Monday, killing 56 people and injuring 131 others.

According to the Ministry of Public Security’s Traffic Police Department, the number of traffic accidents increased by 72 against the New Year holiday in 2023, while deaths and injuries grew by six and 80 people respectively.

During the New Year holiday, up to 25,500 road traffic violations were detected and charged with total fines of VND58 billion (USD2.39 million). The traffic police also revoked 5,200 driving licenses and seized 9,500 motorbikes and 315 cars.

Among those, 7,500 people were found drunk driving and 5,100 other cases were fined for speeding.

The Ministry of Public Security’s Traffic Police Department reported, that the traffic police nationwide dealt with 3.4 million traffic violations and imposed a total fine of VND6.5 trillion (USD268.59 million) in 2023. Around 660,000 driving licenses were confiscated, and more than one million vehicles were confiscated. There were over 770,000 cases of drunk driving.
