According to Le Thanh Hung, Chairman of the Dong Cuong Commune People’s Committee, villagers in San Bay Hamlet found the bomb while working in their fields in late September and immediately alerted local authorities.

The unexploded ordnance measures around 1.2 metres in length and weighs approximately 300 kilogrammes.

Hung said recent flooding had delayed disposal efforts. “This afternoon, we began transporting the bomb for controlled detonation at a site about four kilometres from the commune centre, safely away from residential areas,” he added.

Lao Cai has been among the provinces hardest hit by Typhoon Bualoi which left five dead, five missing, 10 others injured, and total estimated losses of VND 2.75 trillion (approximately USD 104.3 million).
