Hanoi has suffered as many as 197 fire accidents in 2012, killing 13 people, injuring 34 others, and causing estimated property losses of VND28 billion.

The figures were released at a December 28 conference held in Hanoi by the Hanoi municipal Police Department for Fire Prevention, and Control.

Actual incidents of fire declined, but the number of fatalities and injuries rose compared to the previous year.

Municipal rescue forces reported 29 incidents caused by electricity faults and hundreds of related explosions. Most fire and explosion accidents were attributed to technical errors and human carelessness.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Pham Quy Ngo praised the achievements of Hanoi’s firefighting forces and called for greater efforts in accident prevention, particularly regarding gas explosions and the use of petrol and other explosive industrial materials.

The department’s representatives devised specific plans for 2013, aiming to reduce fire accidents by 5–10 percent and minimise property losses.

The Public Security Ministry used the conference to present merit certificates to individuals and organisations  in recognition of their significant contributions to ensuring national security and safety.
