The feature film, produced by Vietnam Feature Film Studio Ltd. Co., depicts an 81-day battle between Vietnamese and American soldiers at the citadel in Quang Tri during the summer of 1972. Soldiers, including young students, were called from the north to fight during this battle, many of them sacrificing their lives.

The film was awarded Best Feature Film at Vietnam’s Golden Kite Award in March.

Even though the script was acclaimed by critics and widely praised for its historical accuracy, some aspects of production were found by some to be lacking. In some scenes the director's hands are visible, and many found the battle scenes to be wanting in ferocity.

Ngo Phuong Lan, head of the Cinema Department, said "The scent of burning grass" received support from the National Film Selection Council for the Academy selection this year.

The Academy Awards will be held on February 24, 2013 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
