Over 80 photos taken during the Vietnamese Buddhists Protest in 1963 are being displayed for the first time in Lieu Quan Buddhist Cultural Centre, in Hue from May 17-24.
The government of South Vietnam, led by president Ngo Dinh Diem, favored Catholicism and issued a number of policies that restricted Buddhists' rights.
The situation came to a boiling point in 1963 with a number of protests, especially in HCM City, where monk Thich Quang Duc famously set himself on fire in public. The event attracted world's attention and made the US rethink their support for Ngo Dinh Diem's government.
