The bridge collapses on November 13 as a 30-tonne-load truck passes over it.

A five-tonne-capacity bridge in the southern province of An Giang's Tri Ton District collapsed on Wednesday morning as a 30-tonne-load truck passed over it.

According to a report from local authorities, the accident occurred at 7 am on November 13 when a truck carrying bricks was running through the T6 Bridge.

"The truck has a load capacity of 19 tonnes, but it was transporting 30 tonnes of bricks on the T6 Bridge, which has a load capacity of just five tonnes," the report said. "The truck driver, 28-year-old Doan Duc Vinh, managed to flee his cabin after the truck half fell into the canal."

Vinh said he was transporting bricks from Binh Duong Province to Giang Thanh Border to export to Cambodia.

"As my truck reached the middle of the bridge, it suddenly collapsed, but the truck's head was still stuck on the bridge, so I tried to open the cabin and get out," the driver told the police.

The Tri Ton District People's Committee chairman, Nguyen Van Be Tam, said the T6 Bridge had been used for over a decade and was an important transport route for locals.

"While investigating the case and developing a plan for a new bridge, we'll have to build a temporary bridge to serve traffic immediately," he said.
