Vietnam's Ministry of Defence has unveiled plans to construct a monument honouring soldiers and military experts from Russia, China, Laos, Cambodia, and Cuba for their support during Vietnam’s wars of independence and reunification.

The announcement was made at a meeting chaired by Deputy Defence Minister Hoang Xuan Chien on July 9. The monument will be located within the grounds of the Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi and is part of a series of commemorative activities marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s National Day on September 2.

Chien said the project would serve as a meaningful tribute to foreign personnel who contributed to Vietnam’s national liberation efforts. The monument aims to highlight the solidarity and sacrifices of international allies during critical periods of the country’s modern history.

At the heart of the complex will be a central bronze sculpture symbolising international military solidarity, created by Vietnamese artists. Surrounding the main sculpture will be additional bronze statues dedicated to each of the five nations. These may be designed and constructed either by the respective countries or by Vietnam upon request.

The project will also include a greenstone relief wall designed by Vietnamese sculptors, set within landscaped gardens and open green spaces to enhance its cultural and commemorative value.

Preliminary designs for the statues have already been submitted by leading Vietnamese sculptors and are currently under review. The Ministry of Defence has assigned the Department of Foreign Relations to coordinate with the five countries involved, gather feedback, and finalise designs.

The first cluster of monuments is expected to be completed by August 15.
