Sixty-two farmers representing millions of farm workers in Vietnam were honoured for their great contributions to national agricultural development.

Awards were given for the title of “Excellent Farmer 2013” during the ceremony, held by Nong Thon Ngay Nay or Countryside Today Newspaper on October 15 in Hanoi.
The event drew the participation of several top government leaders, including President Truong Tan Sang, the chairman of Vietnam Farmers’ Association Nguyen Quoc Cuong, along with representatives from several ministries and branches.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Nguyen Quoc Cuong said, “Each of the awardees have their own background and situation but they all have worked hard and creatively and always try to better themselves in their businesses.”
The awardees were selected from 114 applicants sent through localities nationwide. They must meet at least one of criteria set by the organising board, including having initiatives and clever innovation in agricultural production and developing efficient agricultural businesses that bring about big profit and foster rural development.
Of the awarded farmers, 13 were women and five were of ethnic minorities. Trang Xuan Vinh, 70, from the central province of Kon Tum was the oldest awaredee, while Vu Trung Hoc, 34, from the northern province of Vinh Phuc was the youngest.
Luong Minh Dong from central Quang Nam Province was among the most outstanding farmers with an invention he called “the multi-functional ploughing machine’ that was made by combing a plough with a bicycle wheel.
Le Phuoc Loc from the Mekong Delta Province of Tien Giang was nick-named “King of Bevel Items” as he invented several tools that foster gardeners in their work.
Several other farmers were honoured for earning billions of dong a year from farming.
