Trains return to Long Bien Bridge after emergency repairs

Rail services between Hanoi and Haiphong have resumed running across Long Bien Bridge after emergency repairs were completed on damaged steel structures, Vietnam’s railway operator has said.

Vietnam Railways Transport Joint Stock Company said the Haiphong-Hanoi LP8 service was the first passenger train to cross the bridge following the repairs. From February 10 to 12, the LP7/LP8 Hanoi-Haiphong services will depart from and terminate at Long Bien Station.

Other passenger services, including LP2/LP3 and LP6/LP5 on the Hanoi-Haiphong route, as well as HP2 Haiphong-Hanoi and HP1 Hanoi-Haiphong, will continue to depart from and arrive at Hanoi station. The SP7/SP8 services between Hanoi and Lao Cai will also start and end at Hanoi Station.

The “Hanoi five gates” tourist train, operating on February 10, will likewise depart from and terminate at Hanoi station, instead of Gia Lam Station as previously arranged.

The disruption began on the afternoon of February 2, when staff from Ha Hai Railway Joint Stock Company detected damage at span 18 of Long Bien Bridge, posing a direct threat to the structure’s safety and rail traffic.

Rail authorities immediately halted train movements across the bridge to carry out repairs.

During the closure, all passenger services on the Hanoi-Haiphong route and the “Hanoi five gates” train were forced to adjust their departure and arrival points, with passengers boarding and alighting at Gia Lam station rather than Hanoi station.

Freight services were rerouted via Thang Long Bridge and the Bac Hong-Van Dien northern ring line to reach Giap Bat Station.
