Phu Quoc Airport unveils design for VIP terminal

A new VIP terminal at Phu Quoc International Airport has been designed to accommodate state-level visits and special flights, blending modern architecture with cultural elements inspired by the sea.

The 8,500 sq.m facility is part of an expansion project at the airport on Phu Quoc. It was designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, while interiors are handled by Aedas Interiors from Singapore.

The terminal is equipped to serve special flights carrying up to 300 passengers and is expected to welcome heads of state during APEC 2027 and other major events in the future.

Inspired by the ocean

The design concept draws inspiration from the graceful form of the eagle ray, symbolising freedom and resilience. The interior is envisioned as a journey through layers of the ocean, creating an immersive spatial experience.

The terminal is conceived as a living work of art, celebrating the identity of Vietnam’s “pearl island” through contemporary design language.

Local cultural elements, from white sandy beaches and traditional fish sauce making to pearl farming, pepper cultivation, sim wine and coastal fishing village life, are woven into the architectural narrative.

A layered spatial journey

The arrival hall represents the starting point, where natural light reflections mimic shimmering waves on water, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Traditional Vietnamese architectural features subtly appear throughout the structure, including sloped roofs, timber frameworks and refined partitions, offering a sense of familiarity and stability.

Moving deeper into the terminal, the space transitions into cooler tones inspired by the ocean’s mid-depth “twilight zone,” with sapphire and jade hues.

The check-in area features a tall, linear space highlighted by rhythmic wooden columns and wave-like lighting systems, evoking traditional weaving craftsmanship.

Resort-like departure experience

The departure lounge opens into a spacious area with floor-to-ceiling glass panels overlooking the sea. Seating areas are arranged like small “islands” beneath a flowing ceiling design.

The restrained use of colour, natural materials and expansive views creates a calm, resort-like atmosphere, allowing passengers to relax before their journey.

A dedicated area for high-level delegations and state leaders is designed with privacy and flexibility in mind, including meeting rooms, working spaces and reception lounges.

The combination of wood, stone, bronze-toned metals and ceramics conveys both the prestige of a diplomatic gateway and the warmth of Vietnamese cultural identity.
