Luxury resort projects near Lang Co Bay lag behind schedule

Several high-end tourism projects near Lang Co Bay in Hue City have stalled or been abandoned.

Along the Chan May Road through Phu Hai and An Cu Dong 2 hamlets, at least five licensed developments, including Lang Co Ecotourism Villas, Kim Long Lang Co Tourism and Service Complex, Minh Vien International Resort-Lang Co, the Mediterranean Legend Resort, and Lang Co Resort & Golf, are currently on hold.

The Mediterranean Legend Resort, covering 6.9 hectares along Chan May-Lang Co Beach, has been suspended since 2020.

Many of these sites, granted permits 10 to 20 years ago within the Chan May-Lang Co Economic Zone, occupy prime coastal land.

Some were marketed as international-standard resorts with investments ranging from hundreds of millions to over a billion USD, yet remain unfinished, with some areas reduced to white-sand plots now used for illegal sand mining.

Of the five projects, only the Kim Long Lang Co complex is currently under active construction. The Minh Vien International Resort, with total investment of USD 368 million, has recently resumed work and aims to open its first phase in 2026.

According to the Hue City Economic and Industrial Zone Management Board, most developers in the Chan May-Lang Co area were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which slowed project progress. In addition, compensation and land clearance issues at several sites have delayed handovers to investors and hindered implementation.

Many projects are still awaiting policy measures from central authorities to resolve obstacles. Hue City authorities said they will continue urging investors to accelerate construction, while projects unable to proceed may face termination under existing regulations.

Lang Co Bay, located north of Hai Van Pass in Chan May-Lang Co Commune, about 70 km south of Hue City, was named one of the world’s most beautiful bays by the Worldbays Club in 2009. With an area of 42 square kilometres and more than 10 km of coastline, Lang Co offers ideal conditions for tourism and attracts visitors year-round.
