Illegal trekking tours targeted at Ba Den Mountain

Authorities in Tay Ninh Province are cracking down on unauthorised trekking, forest exploration and camping tours at Ba Den Mountain, warning that the activities pose safety and environmental risks.

The Ba Den Mountain National Tourist Area Management Board on August 19 urged organisations and individuals not to operate tourism or commercial services in forest areas without permission from forest managers.

Tran Thi Thu Hang, deputy head of the board, said some operators had recently advertised, taken bookings and charged fees for trekking, forest exploration and camping on unauthorised routes.

She said such activities could endanger visitors, damage forests and conservation efforts, and complicate search-and-rescue operations in emergencies.

The board said it neither operates nor works with any provider of unauthorised trekking or camping services. Authorities will step up inspections and penalise violations under regulations on administrative sanctions in the forestry sector.

Organising forest tours without permission can carry fines of VND 4-6 million (USD 150-230), while unauthorised tourism businesses in forests face fines of VND 6-10 million.

At 986 metres, Ba Den Mountain is known as the "roof of southern Vietnam" and attracts millions of visitors annually for its natural scenery and spiritual and cultural attractions.

A modern cable car system and tourism infrastructure provide visitors with access to the summit.

Tay Ninh welcomed an estimated 6.38 million visitors in the first eight months of 2026, up 11 per cent year on year, including about 125,000 international arrivals.

Tourism revenue was estimated at VND 5.6 trillion, up 36 per cent from a year earlier and equivalent to 70 per cent of the province's annual target.
