Thu Sy Commune in the northern province of Hung Yen has been famous for fish trap weaving over the past two centuries.
The commune is home to hundreds of fish trap weaving artisans, mostly concentrated in the villages of Noi Lang and Tat Vien.

Luong Son Bac, 80, has 70 years experience in fish trap weaving. He said in the past, fish trap weaving was the main source of income for his family. However, over the past 20 years, the number of customers has been on the decline, affecting his income.

Previously, weaving materials were available in the locality, but now households have to buy them from different places.

Bac often puts bamboo slats in his family’s kitchen. When their colour turns dark yellow, they will be used for weaving.

After being completed, fish traps are hung on Bac’s Areca tree to dry.

Gathering for weaving is also an occasion for old people to talk.

Many photographers visit Bac’s house to capture the moments of fish trap weaving.

It takes an experienced fish trap artisan at least an hour to finish a fish trap, while this could take several hours for people who still lack experience.
