According to the city’s construction department, the lane will be built on a 20-metre-wide strip of land along Mai Chi Tho, designed for speeds up to 20 km/h. It will feature signage, painted lane markings and physical separation from motor vehicles.
The project will also include parking areas and public bicycle stations near residential zones to improve accessibility. The investment is estimated to be more than VND 14 billion (approximately USD 570,000). Construction is scheduled to begin in October and is expected to be completed within 90 days.
Mai Chi Tho Boulevard, one of the city’s largest routes, spans about 7km with 10 to 14 lanes. Opened in 2010, it serves as a vital link between downtown and the eastern gateway, connecting to the An Phu intersection and the HCM City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway.
The city is also studying plans for a bicycle and pedestrian lane along Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard, which is expected to stretch nearly 4 kilometres from Rach Chiec Bridge to Saigon Bridge.
HCM City has promoted green transportation since launching a public bicycle rental service in late 2021, which is now popular among young people. Hanoi has also introduced a 4km dedicated cycle lane along the To Lich River.
