Can Gio Biosphere Reserve has nearly 35,000 ha of forest.
Ho Chi Minh City has approved a sustainable forest management plan for Can Gio protective forests through 2030, according to the municipal Forest Protection Management Board.
The city aims to safeguard nearly 35,000 hectares of existing forest and maintain a canopy coverage of about 49 per cent by 2030, helping to conserve ecosystems and biodiversity.
The plan seeks to ensure the sustainable use of protective forest areas, conserve biodiversity, utilise forest landscapes responsibly, promote eco-tourism and ensure fair benefit-sharing with stakeholders, supporting local socio-economic development linked with national defence and security.
HCMC will preserve and enhance the value of the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, improving the forest’s resilience amid increasingly complex climate change.
Economically, the city will develop eco-tourism, resorts and leisure services in the Can Gio protective forest from 2025 to 2030, aiming to attract between 400,000 and 500,000 visitors annually while ensuring responsible, high-quality and sustainable tourism.
As part of its green growth strategy in Can Gio, HCM City will develop forest environmental services in line with regulations and create a model green eco-tourism site at Dan Xay within the mangrove biosphere reserve.
The city also plans to build a mangrove forest park to serve visitors seeking recreation and relaxation.
Between 2023 and 2030, around 1,500 hectares of forest will be enriched and nurtured to improve quality.
