Ethnic minority woman listed among Vietnam’s most influential

Vang Thi Mai, owner of a textile workshop in Ha Giang Province which generates jobs for hundreds of workers, has been named among top 50 most influential women by Forbes Vietnam Magazine.

Vang Thi Mai, owner of a textile workshop in Ha Giang Province which generates jobs for hundreds of workers, has been named among top 50 most influential women by Forbes Vietnam Magazine.

Forbes Vietnam Magazine recently announced the 2017 list of top 50 Vietnamese women for their outstanding achievements in their professions such as politics, business, social activities, education, entertainment and sports. Vang Thi Mai was voted in the category of social activities.

Mai set up her linen textile workshop in Quan Ba District in the early of 2000s with only 10 workers. She now employs more than 100, mostly women, with a monthly income of between VND3-9 million (USD136.3-409). Her facility has helped to improve living conditions of many local women.

The workshop’s products, which have been exported to across the country and 20 European countries, have been favoured by their natural and strong materials and sophisticated patterns of H’mong ethnic minority people.

Mai’s workshop has become an attractive site for tourists.

Mai in H’mong clothes always warmly welcomes visitors and introduces her products to them. She also often shows them how products are made.

To have a completed product, workers have to use 40 highly-skilled manual stages.

Each worker in the workshop trains several children who can earn VND600,000 (USD27) per month from this work.
