A corner of Chu Lai Airport
According to the report, the ministry and the Danang People's Committee have agreed to develop Chu Lai into a 4F-class international airport, with a capacity of 10 million passengers per year by 2030 and 30 million passengers by 2050, aligning with the city's socio-economic development goals.
Under the plan, Chu Lai Airport will serve as a major logistics and cargo transport hub, helping to ease pressure on the existing Danang International Airport located in the densely populated urban area.
For the 2021–2030 period, the development plan includes the construction of a new Terminal T2 with a capacity of 10 million passengers annually, an apron with 30 aircraft stands, and a dedicated cargo terminal capable of handling 3 million tonnes of goods per year. In the long term, additional Terminals T3 and T4 will be built, each with a capacity of 10 million passengers annually.
Experts believe that developing Chu Lai Airport into a modern international airport will unlock growth opportunities for the central region, especially in the context of potential provincial mergers and administrative boundary expansions.
In addition to easing congestion at Danang Airport, Chu Lai is expected to become a driving force for economic development, industry, logistics, and tourism.
Chu Lai Airport welcomed its first commercial flight in 2005. The airport currently features a 3,050-metre runway and a passenger terminal capable of accommodating aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and A321.
