Bach Ma National Park successfully breeds many white pheasants

The wild white pheasant population in Bach Ma National Park in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue has been on the rise thanks to effective conservation and breeding efforts,

According to Nguyen Vu Linh, director of Bach Ma National Park, biodiversity surveys and camera trap monitoring have recorded an upward trend in the park’s wild white pheasant numbers.

Linh added that since 2022, the park has successfully bred 24 white pheasants. When the population is large enough and the birds are healthy, they will be released back into their natural habitat.

Visitors to Bach Ma National Park can often see a small flock of three to five white pheasants each day.

Bach Ma National Park also partners with the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens to exchange stock and prevent inbreeding, and collaborates with international organisations, local authorities, and relevant agencies to rescue, care for, breed, and release white pheasants.

Bach Ma National Park will continue its conservation work and coordinate strict action against violations to help grow the white pheasant population and safeguard other rare species, contributing to the biodiversity of the Central Truong Son region.

Bach Ma National Park has also increased patrols and removed traps and illegal hunting equipment, helping to reduce direct threats to white pheasants and other wildlife.

Linh noted that the white pheasant is a rare species in the pheasant family, order Galliformes. It is an endangered forest animal that was once listed in Group IB, a species at extreme risk of extinction and banned from commercial exploitation or hunting.

Since July 1, the white pheasant has been reclassified to Group IIB, which restricts exploitation and commercial use.
