Hanoi's tiny Old Quarter lanes

The capital’s Old Quarter, where is considered the heart of Hanoi that preserves the city's the cultural lifestyle, has a lot of tiny lanes full of hotels, restaurants, cafes, markets and shops.

The capital’s Old Quarter, where is considered the heart of Hanoi that preserves the city's the cultural lifestyle, has a lot of tiny lanes full of hotels, restaurants, cafes, markets and shops.

To reduce the Old Quarter's population density from the current 823 persons per hectare to 500 persons per hectare, the capital has carried out a resettlement plan to relocate more than 1,500 households in Hoan Kiem's Old Quarter to the Viet Hung Urban Area in Long Bien District.

The first phase of the plan was scheduled for completion by the end of 2016 and the second phase will be completed between 2017 and 2020.

  

Trung Yen alley linking Gia Ngu and Dinh Liet streets is around 3-4 metres wide with shops and temporary markets. The alley has also many private hotels mainly serving tourists

 

Some sections in Alley 40 on Tran Nhat Duat Street are only 60cm wide.
