Illegally-transported rare pangolins rescued

The Save Vietnam's Wildlife (SVW) Centre has worked with Cuc Phuong National Park to successfully rescue 11 rare Javan pangolins.

Earlier, the police in the northern province of Ha Nam's Phu Ly City found a truck carrying various goods, including four foam boxes tightly sealed with adhesive tape.

After checking, the police found 13 rare pangolins, each tightly bound in mesh bags, including two that were already dead.

Two of the 13 pangolins are already dead.

One of the two deceased individuals was the rare and critically endangered Chinese pangolin, of which very few remain in the wild.

According to an SVW representative, the majority of the animals were rescued in a state of stress, dehydration, emaciation, and diarrhoea, with two, in particular, being severely injured due to being trapped.

All 11 surviving animals have been taken to Cuc Phuong National Park in the northern province of Ninh Binh to be cared for.

The Chinese and Javan pangolins are listed as Critically Endangered (CR) in the IUCN Red List and are included in Group IB of the list of endangered, rare wildlife species in Vietnam's Red Book.
