The severe cold weather has struck Son La since January 12, leading to widespread frost.
The hardest-hit communes in Son La City are Chieng Den and Hua La, with 37.3 hectares and 32 hectares affected, respectively. Chieng Co Commune has the remaining damage.
Authorities in Son La City have urged residents to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of frost on crops.
For coffee trees with withered leaves and young branches, it is recommended to prune the burned branches to minimise moisture loss, collect weeds, and apply leaves and branches as mulch around the coffee roots.
Due to their age, it may be necessary to cut them down severely. After pruning, apply a mixture of quicklime and water to the cut surfaces, then fertilize and water the tree to stimulate the growth of new stems and branches.
Older coffee trees that are heavily affected and cannot recover should be felled and replaced with new plants.
