Standing at the altar of his grandfather, the boy Vu The Bao said that he missed his granddad alot.

"My grandad died a month ago in a traffic accident and I missed him so much," the boy said as he burst into tears. "I meet him in my dreams every day."

However, the boy wiped his tears when turning to his grandmother, Trinh Thi Huyen, 59, who has been bed-ridden for several years following a stroke. Bao came to help turn over her grandma after she waved her hands and called him with a weak voice.

The elderly ill woman shared that her late husband and she had a daughter, Vu Thi Trang, who was rather dull.

"Trang left us to seek jobs and returned in 2014 when she was pregnant with Bao," she recalled. "Then she left just a short time after giving birth, leaving the baby for us. She didn’t make any contact or return until 2021 when she was pregnant with her daughter Vu Khanh Linh. She said she didn't know who the fathers of her babies were, and soon left home again after giving birth. And she has never returned since."

Huyen said that she and her late husband had done odd jobs trying to support their two small grandchildren. But difficulties have hit their small family after she was struck down by a stroke and especially after her husband suddenly died in an accident.

"He died in a traffic accident while on the way to work at the rice farm," she said. "We've now lost the pillar of our family and I can’t do anything to support our two small grandchildren. Bao even has to help me with all my personal activities."

After his grandfather died, Bao has had to do all the housework and take care of her three-year-old sister and ill grandmother.

"We've received some financial support from some relatives and neighbours after granddad died," he said. "But the money is running out and I don't know where to find money to buy food in the coming days."

Bao said that some relatives have proposed sending him and her little sister to a local child protection centre but he just wanted to stay with his grandmother.

"I don't want to go anywhere, I just want to stay home and take care of my grandmother. And I hope that my mum will return," he cried.

Vice chairman of Thang Binh Commune People's Committee, Le Xuan Hoa, said that this was a very difficult case and he hoped that they will receive support from kind donors.

"Both the two small children and their paralysed grandmother need help to overcome this difficult time," the official said.
