Giap Thi Viet, 60, has been struggling taking care of her three-year-old grandson Ngo Binh An at the hospital.

"He has faced cerebral palsy since birth," the poor grandmother said in tears, looking at her ill grandchild who is also facing malnutrition.

Viet said that the boy's mother developed blood cancer while in the 20th week of pregnancy. Doctors advised her to end the pregnancy to follow treatment but she insisted on keeping her child and refused cancer treatment.

"My daughter-in-law managed to keep her child who was then delivered via Caesarean section at her 31st week of pregnancy," she said. "Her newborn child was immediately brought to a light box for further care and she died 17 days after that."

The child was kept for over a month in the hospital and then the grandmother brought him home, struggling to raise him under financial difficulties.

When the child was six months, the poor grandmother started to notice his abnormal development. She brought him back to the hospital where doctors said that he faced cerebral palsy due to premature birth, which may need life-time treatment.

"I was very shocked to hear about this," she said. "And since then we've had to spend more time in the hospital than at home. Meanwhile, his father's modest income as a manual worker is not enough to cover the treatment."

"Many times Binh An arrived late for his scheduled treatment due to his family's financial difficulties," the doctor said. "I hope that he would receive more support to continue his treatment."
