Phan Thi Thanh, 32, from Duy Xuyen District’s Duy Hoa Commune is taking care of her eldest son Nguyen Hoang Minh Hieu, 10.

Hieu is on the verge of death.

Hieu has been struggling with autoimmune encephalitis for over the past two years. Initially, he suffered from seizures and was quickly taken to the Danang Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital. Despite undergoing numerous examinations, the doctors failed to identify the cause.

One month later, he started falling into deep comas. Doctor had to conduct blood filtering and a spinal tap for testing, which showed that he faced autoimmune encephalitis.

He has undergone one brain surgery and five blood filtering procedures, however, his condition has not improved. Since then, he has been in a vegetative state.

The Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 brought about more difficulties for Hieu’s treatment.

Hieu was taken home for self-treatment recently as his family can’t afford the treatment.

According to Thanh, her family’s main income depends on her husband who works as a builder.

Thanh hoped that donors could help her son so that he can be taken to a hospital in HCM City for treatment.
