Many irrigation reservoirs in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue have witnessed low water levels following prolonged hot fronts.

The water capacity of Tho Son Reservoir in Huong Tra Commune currently reaches only 57 percent of the design capacity.

At a headwater branch of Tho Son Reservoir, people dug several deep holes to try to preserve some of the water. They have also installed water pumps for agricultural irrigation.

The water level at Truoi Reservoir has declined sharply. Its current capacity is equal to 57 percent of the design capacity. The reservoir serves 8,200 hectares of crops and rice in Phu Loc District and Huong Thuy Town.

Phu Bai 2 Reservoir has a capacity of around six million cubic metres, accounting for 40 percent of the design figure.

The same situation is reported at many others, including Ho Son Reservoir in Huong Tho Commune in Hue City.

Thua Thien-Hue has 55 reservoirs and hydroelectric dams, consisting of 36 small ones managed by localities and 15 big ones managed by the Thua Thien-Hue Irrigation Works Management Company.

All 15 big reservoirs, including Khe Ngang, Ta Rinh, Chau Son, Nam Lang, Thuy Yen, and Hoa My, have failed to ensure the design water capacity.

During the summer-autumn crop of 2024, Thua Thien-Hue had nearly 28,000 hectares of rice. Of this, the Thua Thien-Hue Irrigation Works Management Company will provide water to 19,000 hectares.

According to the firm, at least 800 hectares of rice, concentrated in A Luoi District, will struggle with water during this year’s summer-autumn crop.
