Two crested goshawks found in Quang Tri garden

Two juvenile crested goshawks, a protected bird species, have been taken into temporary care after they were found in a resident's garden in Quang Tri Province.

Local authorities in Dong Le Commune said that they had transferred the birds to the Centre for Rescue, Conservation and Development of Organisms at Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park for care while officials verify their ownership.

The birds, each weighing about 0.6 kg, were discovered by a local resident, who alerted the authorities after recognising they were protected wildlife.

Both birds were in good health but were too young to feed themselves and would receive specialised care.

If no owner comes forward within five days, authorities will decide whether to release the birds into the wild or place them under long-term conservation.

The crested goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus) is listed as a Group IIB protected species under Vietnamese law, which regulates the management of endangered wildlife and implements the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The public was urged not to hunt, keep, trade or transport protected wildlife illegally, as public cooperation plays an important role in conserving biodiversity.
