The monkeys recently appeared in Vuong Village in Phu Yen District’s Tan Lang Commune and have repeatedly harmed local crops.

Dinh Van Hung from Vuong Village said over half a hectare of his family’s maize garden was damaged, so they had to replant it.

Resident Vu Dinh Thu said that his one hectare of maize usually produces six tonnes, but this year, the figure will be just five tonnes.

Dinh Van Hien, chairman of Tan Lang Commune, said that the monkeys often come in groups of 7-10 to ruin crops.

Local authorities have instructed people to prevent the monkeys by setting up guard posts, installing nets, using scarecrows and loudspeakers, and directly guarding the fields.

People have also been asked not to hunt, capture or kill the monkeys. Instead, they only need to drive them away.
