A large area of forest in the Hoang Lien National Park has been damaged in two consecutive fires which occurred between February 19-21.

Chairman of Sapa Town People's Committee, To Ngoc Lien said that as of 8.30 am on February 22, the latest fire had been properly brought under control.

"The fire broke out on the evening of February 21 at a forested area in Ta Van Commune," the official said. "Some 600 people had joined in rescue activities. The fire has been controlled but we're still closely watching to prevent it from breaking out again."

Smoke was still coming out at the site on Thursday morning. A vast area of trees has been burnt, leaving thick layers of ash.

Earlier on February 19-20, a big fire also broke out, burning about 30 hectares of forest in Hoang Lien.

According to the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, the northwestern region is facing a heat wave with dry weather, posing the risk of fire.

The fires are said to easily spread after a large area of plants died due to the frost last December, leaving them to dry and able to quickly catch fire.
