The southern province of Ben Tre on Monday announced a state of erosion emergency at local beaches.

According to the provincial people’s committee, erosion has hit 4.70 kilometres of coastline in Ba Tri District’s Bao Thuan Commune, affecting 115 households. Four houses have been totally ruined and 11 others would need to be relocated.

Riversides and coastal erosion has expanded in Ben Tre.

The erosion has also damaged some 100 metres of concrete road, 650 metres of dyke, 16 hectares of protective forest and 45 hectares of crops.

The committee has urged Ba Tri District to relocate people in the affected areas to safe places and take measures to mitigate their losses.

Last week, Ben Tre also announced an erosion emergency in an area near Giao Hoa River with nearly 300 households affected.

According to the Ben Tre Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, riversides and coastal erosion has expanded in the locality. The districts of Ba Tri, Binh Dai, Thanh Vu, Cho Lach and Mo Cay Nam have been hardest hit.

Some 13 kilometres of riverbanks and 8.5 kilometres of coastal areas in Ben Tre are facing severe erosion. The province needs around VND1 trillion (USD40.81 million) to tackle the problem.
