Hundreds of people have been deployed to fortify a 300-metre section of dyke in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue ahead of Storm Trami.

The dyke along the coastline in Phu Vang District’s Phu Thuan Commune has faced severe erosion for many years, encroaching 50-100 metres inland.

The erosion threatens around 860 households, totalling 4,087 people in Phu Thuan. Many are at a high risk of losing their homes.

On Tuesday, around 300 deployed people, including border guards and residents, used 2,500 square metres of filter fabric and 600 cubic metres of rock to consolidate the heavily eroded areas. Many times, high waves challenged their efforts.

Hoang Hai Minh, vice chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue People’s Committee, was present in Phu Thuan Commune to instruct the work. According to Minh, the dyke consolidation must be completed today, October 23, as Storm Trami is forecasted to bring torrential rains to the central region of Vietnam.

Approximately 14.5 kilometres of the Thua Thien-Hue total 127-kilometre coastline are ravaged by erosion. Phu Vang, Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Phu Loc, and Hue City have been hardest hit.

Since 2014, the province has poured VND1 trillion (USD40.32 million) into building sea dykes.
