At least 180 trees, including 108 old pine trees, will be cut down or removed to upgrade Hoang Van Thu Street in the tourist city of Dalat.

According to the Lam Dong Provincial Department of Construction, the Dalat City People's Committee has proposed to cut down or remove 108 old pine trees, which have an average height of 15 metres and diameter of 47cm.

"Pine trees have become a symbol of Dalat, so we've made a public announcement about removing the trees here," the department said. "Many people have expressed their regrets and hopes that local authorities will adjust the project to limit the effects on the trees as much as possible."

The department added that Dalat authorities have also proposed to cut down 52 other trees on Le Hong Phong Street.
