Ha Long Bay to revive folk courting songs for tourists

Traditional courting songs will return for tourists in Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh Province by March, after performances were halted by Typhoon Yagi.

The Ha Long Bay Conservation Centre 2, under the Ha Long Bay-Yen Tu World Heritage Management Board, is restoring courting song performances at the Cua Van floating cultural centre.

The centre has reviewed performers who previously took part in modernised courting song training. Singer pairs were asked to perform items from the 2024 programme to assess readiness, with most maintaining their skills despite minor shortcomings.

To prepare for the revival, the management board has asked the centre to standardise procedures, continue rehearsals, replace costumes and props, and coordinate with relevant units to resume shows before March 2026.

The courting song programme was first introduced for tourists at the Cua Van floating cultural centre in 2017 but was suspended after Typhoon Yagi damaged the facility in September 2024.

Tour operators have incorporated the performances into their tour packages, making them a highlight of visits to the Unesco-listed Ha Long Bay.
