A poor woman in northern Nam Dinh province is struggling to raise three ill children while her husband and relatives blame her for the children's bad health.
Sang is blamed for the children's bad health and beaten
That is the case of Nguyen Thi Sang in Nghia Lam Commune, Nghia Hung District. When she married, people said the groom was so lucky to be able to have such a good and hard-working girl. Yet her life has made a turn for the worse.
Her five-member family all live in a 10 square meter house. One rickety bed, a small wardrobe that someone threw away and several worn-out slippers are the total contents of the house.
Oldest child Tran Van Thinh
Her first child is Tran Van Thinh. Though Thinh is 17 years old, his mind is like that of a newborn baby so Sang has to pay extra attention in taking care of him. Thinh is spoon-fed and can only smile or scream all day. Sang tried to take him to hospital once but the doctors were helpless when confronted with the child's behaviour.
Tran Van Duy always wants to work to help mother despite the crooked arm
Her second child, 11-year-old Tran Van Duy, does not have his brother's illness, however, Duy's arm is crooked. To lessen his mother's burden, Duy often goes to lakes to find crabs for sale and never asks mother to take him to hospital. "Mother doesn't have money so I won't ask." Duy said.
"I know he loves me because though his arm is usually in pain, he tries to work as hard as possible. He even harvested crops on other people's farms for some money." Sang said. She cried while remembering that her son had to work under a scorching sun.
Four-year-old Tran Thi Thuy has a distorted face
When Sang was pregnant the third time, she wished for a healthy child to bring her some relief. However, four-year-old Tran Thi Thuy has a distorted face. But Thuy is a bright girl. She always smiles, in an attempt to persuade her oldest brother not to scream so much while mother is working.

Sang hopes that she can take the children to hospital
Even Sang has several illnesses and her neighbours said they feel scared whenever she works on the farm because tt looks like she might faint at any moment. But she has to work to support the whole family.
To make life harder, Sang is often beaten by her husband but she tries to cover up for him, "He is the father of my children. Though his income from catching eels only amounts to tens of thousands of VND, it's enough for our daily meals." she said.
Sang's only wish is to be able to take her children to hospital.
