A young woman in Thai Binh Province is calling for financial help to treat her mother who is struggling with cancer and also her small son with inborn heart disease.
Phong may die without permanent pacemaker
Nguyen Thi Nhip from Hai Ninh Village, Thai Thuy District said, due to poverty, they were unable to arrange surgery for her five-year-old child.
"Our child had surgery a month ago thanks to the Operation Healthy Heart programme. However, on September 2, he suddenly couldn't breathe so we took him to hospital. The doctor said he need a permanent pacemaker to live but it'll take hundreds of million of VND." she said.
The huge money is a burden to the mother
Dr Vu Dinh Hung from the Department of Internal Medicine Resuscitation, Hanoi Heart Hospital said Phong has complex congenital heart defects. Even though the previous surgery repaired the heart valves and temporarily increased the flow of blood to the lungs with a Blalock–Taussig Shunt, his disease wasn't completely cured and in fact it got worse.
"After he was admitted to hospital, we tried to use cardiostimulatory drugs but his heart rate is still under 50 bpm, much lower than normal. He'll need a permanent pacemaker but the cost is as high as VND100 million." he said.
Phong also wants to go to school
Phong is too weak to speak and he always looks like he's about to cry through the oxygen mask.
Meanwhile, Nhip also has to take care of her mother, who has lung cancer, at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital. Nhip and her husband are poor farmers so they have been struggling a lot with two ill family members. "It's lucky that families of other patients in hospital give me food or else I wouldn't be able to stand it. I have nothing. I can't even buy decent food for my mom." Nhip said.
Nhip had cried when she said she felt ashamed of herself and deeply feared of losing her son.
