In Phan Chuong hamlet, Quyet Thang Commune, Bui Thi Thanh’s rundown stilt house lies at the foot of a mountain, sheltering four family members.

Thanh's husband, Bui Van Than, 64, has been paralysed in his right arm and leg since childhood, leaving him unable to walk or work. Thanh single-handedly manages the household and tends to his every personal need.
The youngest son, Bui Van Tung, 20, was born mute and has suffered from a mental disorder since childhood. He is often uncontrollable, running around and destroying things.
Thanh’s 24-year-old eldest son does odd jobs in Bac Ninh with an unstable income. Some months, he sends home a little for rice or medicine; other months, nothing. Knowing his hardships, the couple have never asked or complained.
Their only possessions are an old fan, a chipped rice cooker, a few dented pots, mouldy corn, and bags of old clothes. Most days, meals are just boiled vegetables and fish sauce.
Thanh's house can collapse at any time
The family survives on a modest monthly disability allowance of VND 1.5 million.

According to Bui Xuan Tre, head of Phan Chuong hamlet, Thanh’s family is struggling with difficulties. They depend primarily on disability support and the kindness of neighbours.
