“I wish my body was normal as it once was. I never imagined that I would become nearly disabled like this,” said Phan Thi Dieu, 32, living in Quang Tri Province.
Phan Thi Dieu is under treatment at Hue Central Hospital
Dieu is living in Na Nam Hamlet, Trieu Nguyen Commune, Dakrong District, Quang Tri Province. She was born in a remote mountainous area. Despite many challenges, she led a happy life when she could work hard to help Nguyen Lam, her husband, and raise their two children.
One day, she randomly suffered from a severe accident. While cooking, she hit the pertrol can which then burst into flames burning 75% of her entire body.
Her husband took her to the hospital for emergency treatment. After 2 months, the costs were VND100 million ($5,200). Her husband was forced to take care of her in the hospital and look after their small children. One is the 5th grade and the other in 6th.
Ever since she was discharged from the hospital, her husband has taken care of all the housework. After working in the fields, he spends time finding medical treatments to help his wife and nurses her very carefully. Her burns are very serious and she still cannot move either of her legs.
Now, she has to be admitted to the hospital once again for facial treatment. Dieu said, “The burn made me helpless to take care of my family and the fields. My life has become extremely hard.”
Last September, a flood swept away her home forcing them to start all over again and now, she is looking at another obstacle to overcome.
Her husband is very worried about finding a way to cover hospital fees which are beyond his capacity right now. He shared, “I hate to see my wife like this but we don’t have enough money for the operation. We already borrowed a lot of money from relatives and neighbours. We cannot borrow from them anymore.”
Dieu thinks that it’s the most miserable period of her life. She wishes her body would heal so she can go back to caring for her husband and children.
