Hoang Thi Thanh and her youngest son.
Hoang Thi Thanh, 38, said her husband Nguyen Hung, 39, passed away after several days of treatment for severe injuries following a workplace accident in Taiwan.
The couple have three children aged between 11 and 17. Thanh works in agriculture, while Hung had been employed as a construction worker. Facing financial hardship and Thanh’s poor health, Hung left for Taiwan three years ago as a migrant worker, hoping to secure a stable income. The family borrowed VND 300 million (approximately USD 12,000) from banks, relatives and friends to cover his expenses.
However, in his first years abroad, Hung’s company faced difficulties, and his income was unstable.
“He often called home, saying he felt sad that he could not send enough money for me to pay off debts and raise the children. I tried to comfort him, telling him to stay healthy while we managed at home,” Thanh recalled tearfully.
Understanding their parents’ struggles, the eldest daughter, Gia Linh, took a part-time job at a restaurant 30 kilometres away to help support the family.
On September 4, Hung suffered a workplace accident, sustaining brain trauma, internal injuries and broken bones. He was hospitalised in critical condition.
He remained unconscious for five days, with treatment costs amounting to tens of millions of dong daily. With support from a relative and the Vietnamese community in Taiwan, his care was partly covered. However, he passed away on September 9.

Hung’s body is currently being kept at a hospital in Taiwan, awaiting paperwork for repatriation. Relatives said the cost of bringing him home is very high, and the family is struggling to raise the funds.
“Hung was kind and hardworking, but fate was cruel. Now our only wish, shared by both families and the children, is to bring him home. We sincerely hope for kind support,” Thanh said in tears.
Nguyen Nam Bieu, head of Kim Son Hamlet in Gia Hanh Commune, confirmed the family’s difficult circumstances.
“We appeal to readers of Dantri and benefactors to help so that Hung can be brought home and the children can continue their schooling,” he said.
