Lonely and depressed, elderly woman has little hope

A 87 year old woman is left alone to look at pictures of her husband and children who passed away.

Phan Thi Chau lives alone in her house at 41 Tran Huy Lien Road in Hue City and wishes that she could have family with her to spend time together like so many others.

Living by herself, Chau feels depressed.

Her house is too small for a family but it becomes big and cold when she’s the only one in the house. “Some people come to give me food, then they leave. I have nobody to talk with and many people think that there’s nobody at home when they pass my house. People around here are busy living their lives," said Chau.

She cried as she shared, “My first 3 kids died long ago. A fourth child died last year. My youngest daughter got married but lives very far away and is very poor. She visits once or twice a year. My life is so miserable. I just want to die but don’t know when I can.”

While talking to us, she stood up and reached to the altar, “I am sorry. I forgot to turn the light on when it’s dark. I nearly lost my vision in recent years. I don’t have money and live alone so I lost my habit of turning the light on when it turns dark.”

She said that she hasn’t had enough money to buy food for a long time. She lives on the kindness of neighbours who sometimes give her rice. She eats rice with salt.

Due to diseases, her body kept shivering while speaking to us, but she has no money to see a doctor. Her health condition is getting worse.
