Doan Van Thanh and Nguyen Thi Lan receive their new house on September 20.

The house for Doan Van Thanh and Nguyen Thi Lan, both 70, was built with nearly VND 169 million (approximately USD 6,600) donated by Dantri/Dtinews readers. Construction company Phan Nguyen provided full support for the building process.

During the handover ceremony on September 20, Lan guided her blind husband through each corner of their long-awaited new home. Thanh, who was born blind into a poor fishing family, had spent his youth earning a living by singing on the streets.

Nearly 40 years ago, he married Lan. The couple had lived in a dilapidated French-built bunker in My Thuong Ward, later moving into a small space inside their family’s ancestral house. In 2022, local authorities allocated them land, but illness and poverty left them unable to build.

“Today, holding the keys to this house still feels like a dream. I am deeply grateful to Dtinews, readers, and benefactors for helping us finally have a place to call our own,” Thanh said.
