Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien has decided to donate VND10 million (USD476.2) to an abandoned girl, who is also facing cancer, in Vinh Long Province, because of her sympathy for the girl's efforts to overcome the situation.
In spite of suffering from the cancer, Van still tries to work to earn living
The article about Huynh Thi Ai Van, 17, in My Quoi Village, My Trung Thanh Commune, Tam Binh District, Vinh Long Province was published on Dantri Newspaper on August 24.
The donation is from the ministry’s Bright Future Fund which specialises in offering support to cancer patients.
When Van was just 7 years old, her parents divorced and both found new partners, leaving her alone. Since then, she has lived with her grandmother and uncle who are also poor. She knew she must study hard so she could have a bright future. When she was in Grade 9, she won certificates of merit for her study achievements.
To get money for books, Van had to catch crabs, earning some VND12,000 per day. She also weaved nylon bags in her spare time, getting just VND600 each, and she continued the work despite being tortured by the disease.
Then in the second term of Grade 11, she began to face more serious health problems such as breathing difficulties, nasal congestion and dizziness, but she still tried to finish the term exams. After that, she was diagnosed with nasal cancer and had to begin chemotherapy.
Tran Cong Danh, Headmaster of Tran Dai Nghia High School, said the school called for assistance to Van from the pupils and teachers. She is exempted from tuition fees. He added that whenever she returned from hospital, she went back to school, showing her strong will.
Since her mother left home, she has returned to see Van twice. Meanwhile, she can only meet her father every two years.
She said in tears that she was frightened of the cost of the chemotherapy due to her family’s financial difficulties. Despite the constant pain of the disease, a pain even worse is the lack of parental care.
With her efforts, she has been accepted into Can Tho University’s Literature Department. This is her joy but it cannot completely offset her concern about the cancer and her general difficult situation.
