A small girl has struggled with the blood disease Thalassemia for 13 years while her poor family struggles to afford the hospital treatment.
Dung is in need of plasma exchange
Thirteen year-old Tran Thi Hanh Dung from Hoa Vang District in Danang City grew up with her maternal grandparents after being abandoned by her parents.
Dung's grandparents are poor farmers and also suffer from ill health due to their age. Two years ago, her grandmother passed away so Dung only has her grandfather to depend on.
Since birth, Dung has had continual hospital treatment because the disease requires her to receive blood transfusions once or twice a month.
She was recently diagnosed with a biliary tract infection. She was admitted to Danang Hospital on May 22 after her condition worsened and needed a plasma exchange. Currently, Dung's mother is busy taking care of her three-month old baby so she only visits Dung occasionally.

Doctor Le Hong Phong from Danang Hospital's emergency care unit said Thelasssemia weaken Dung's resistance and caused the current severe biliary tract infection. Depending on the clinical examination, Dung will need between two or four plasma exchanges for the biliary tract infection treatment which costs VND18 million (USD863) each.
Hoang Thi Trang, a teacher of Dung at Nguyen Ba Phat Primary School said, "Dung is smaller than other classmates, and her skin turned bright yellow from the disease. She often has to go to hospital for blood transfusions even though her family is poor."
"Dung lives with her 60 year-old grandfather and two uncles but her grandfather has tuberculosis while one uncle has heart disease. She really needs help." Le Thi Ngoc Diep, official about family and children of Hoa Lien Commune said.
