A 15-year-old girl in Ben Tre Province is struggling to continue her studies despite fighting two debilitating diseases that have drained her family of all their resources.
Le Thi Cam Tu fell ill a month ago. "She said her stomach hurt so we brought her to Nguyen Dinh Chieu Hospital," her mother, Le Thi Phuong, said.
"Then a week later, the doctor said she has uterine fibroids and needs surgery," Phuong said. "While staying at hospital, she felt tired and was transferred to HCM City Heart Hospital where she was diagnosed with tricuspid regurgitation."

Phuong said she had her husband, Le Hoang Nhan, borrowed money for immediate treatment but have been unable to repay the debt.
"Doctors said to bring her for a recheck on uterine fibroids then to HCM City Heart Hospital for another check-up on her heart. We don't know what to do now," she said.
Tu has to take medicine everyday
On hearing of Tu's illness, her teachers and friends at school donated VND3m (USD143) for her. The Red Cross organisation in Tan Loi Thach Commune also donated VND2m.
Due to the heart disease, she tires easily and is on daily medication. But Tu said she really likes studying and is considered by her teachers and classmates to be an outstanding student. Tu cried when she could not participate in the final exam for first semester.
"Tu is a hard-working and an outstanding student of our school. We called for financial support in order to help her somehow but she need more support from the community to continue studying," the headmaster of Tan Loi Thach Secondary School said.

Tu's parents, who married in 1988 and had two children, have had their share of problems. Phuong was diagnosed with uterine polyps. Tens of millions of VND was spend on the treatment and surgery, pushing their family into difficulties. Nhan works as a brick-layer, but he and his wife struggle to meet normal daily needs.
