Garbage bins are in abundance along many streets in the city which is located in Nghe An Province. People see three waste collection points along Minh Khai Road while as many as ten garbage bins are seen in front of the provincial Department of Education and Training. Waste even overflows on to the roads, bringing in bad smells and attracting a large number of flies. Other roads, including Minh Khai, Ho Tung Mau, Quang Trung and Nguyen Truong To, are all facing the same problem.
Garbage, including dead animals and livestock waste, is piled up in front of local trade centres like Ga and Vinh markets.
Locals said waste has been mounting since January 4 and they were really surprised at the massive amount of garbage on standstill.
"Waste has been piling up for some days but nobody has cleared it. If the situation is not improved right away, it could cause serious environmental pollution. Despite being fully aware of the bad smell and image, we find no authorised people to deal with,” Nguyen Thi Nguyet, a goods seller in Ga market complained.
When reporters of DanTri/DTiNews arrived at the office of the environmental service in Vinh on January 5, both the director and deputy directors were absent.
A company official said, “The Hung Dong dump site has been closed since December 31, 2010. The municipal government has approved a plan to use the Nghi Yen site starting from January 1 but it was rejected.”
He attributed that the company’s leaders have reported the case to the municipal and provincial authorities but no solutions have been drawn out, causing the waste to pile up.
When asked, locals explained that waste basins in Nghi Yen dump site have not yet been filled with concrete. Therefore, they worried that waste-water may draw into the land and pollute water sources nearby that are used for their daily life.
