Woman struggling to support family
Tang Thi Ly lives in Ba Doat Hamlet in Binh Giang District’s Long Xuyen Commune.
Two weeks before Tet, her mother-in-law killed herself because she could no longer bear the pain of stomach cancer, treatment for which the family could not afford.

Her father-in-law has a serious skin condition, cirrhosis and peritonitis, but the family has no money for medical care.Her husband, Tran Van Thiem, has peritonitis and is often unable to work.

“I find I am helpless with my son’s ailment. I plan to borrow some money to take him to hospital,” Ly said.
Nguyen Van Manh, head of Ba Doat Hamlet, said, “Ly’s family is in desperate situation. We’ve provided them with some comfort but we lack funding.”
Ly said, “I’m really afraid of being poor not because of the lack of food or clothing but because of the miserable consequences, such as what happened to my mother-in-law."
