Dantri/Dtinews plans 50 floating flood houses for Dak Lak residents

Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper has approved a project to build 50 floating flood-resistant houses for vulnerable households in Dak Lak Province.

The project, signed off by the newspaper's editor-in-chief, will provide 50 floating homes, each about 20 square metres, built with insulated steel roofing and fitted with empty oil drums to keep them afloat. The houses will be anchored by four corner pillars to prevent drifting.

The scheme has a total construction value of VND1.75 billion (USD67,307) and will be implemented in Dong Xuan and Tuy An Bac communes.

Nguyen Thien Van, vice-chair of the Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee, welcomed the initiative, saying the province was also mobilising social resources alongside local budgets to rebuild more than 680 homes destroyed and repair nearly 1,500 severely damaged by recent floods.

Over 6,000 houses are flooded in Dak Lak's Dong Xuan Commune in a flood on November 19, 2025.

Provincial leaders thanked Dantri, its readers and donors for helping ease the hardships faced by flood-hit communities.

Nguyen Minh Quang, vice-chair of the Tuy An Bac Commune People’s Committee, said many areas of the commune were low-lying and prone to flooding during the rainy season.

He added that the floating house model previously built by Dantri in Quang Tri Province had proved effective in helping residents stay safe during natural disasters, and expressed hope the programme would continue in the commune.

In recent months, Dantri/Dtinews readers have supported flood victims across central and Central Highlands provinces, including Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Hue, Danang, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa.

Most recently, the newspaper delivered VND3 billion (USD115,385) raised from readers to flood-affected communities in Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa, with each locality receiving VND1 billion (USD38,462).

Dantri called on readers and benefactors to continue supporting the programme to help families protect their property and, above all, ensure safety during the flood season.
