Than Thi Lan, 45, from Ha Hoa District’s Minh Coi Commune, was diagnosed with leukaemia three years ago.
Her husband died from brain cancer 10 years ago, leaving her with three children, aged 18, 15 and 12, and his elderly ill mother. They are living in a dilapidated home with nothing of value inside.
The house has severely deteriorated, so the family members are always worried about the risk of collapse during stormy nights.

According to Lan, her husband was found to have brain cancer in 2013. Despite great efforts for the treatment, he passed away two years later.
Lan had to do different jobs to support the family from early morning to late afternoon. In mid-2022, she felt tired and sustained long fevers. Doctors said that she had suffered from essential thrombocythemia, a rare blood disorder that causes the bone marrow to produce too many platelets.
Lacking the proper treatment has worsened Lan’s condition. By late 2023, while working in the field, she fainted. Fortunately, her neighbours promptly took her to hospital.

She has incurred considerable debt from various sources and now does not want to borrow more for further treatment.
