An 14-year old boy in the central province of Ha Tinh whose farther died and abandoned by his mother is fighting against an inborn heart disease.
Certificates of merit for Hai’s study achievements
The farther of the boy, Nguyen Quang Hai, a student from Class 9A of Binh Anh Thinh Secondary School in Loc Ha District died in a traffic accident, while his mother has left home after he was born.
Hai is now living with his maternal grandmother, Nguyen Thi Tan. Every day he has to go to the fields to catch crabs so that he can have money to pay school fees. Despite the hardships he has always been a successful student.
His grandmother said Hai’s mother was pregnant before being married to his father. Before the wedding day, his farther died in the traffic accident. After giving birth, the mother left her son to go to somewhere without saying a word. No one in the family knows where she is.

Hai’s paternal grandparents refused to take care of him, so he bears his mother’s surname. Despite old age, his grandmother has to work as a hired labourer to earn money.
Understanding the grandmother’s hardship, Hai is very obedient and diligent. Nonetheless, when she returns home from gathering crabs, she often finds the boy unconscious and has to take him to a local clinic.
Ms. Tan knows her nephew’s disease, but can’t afford take him to Hanoi for the treatment. She had to borrowed VND5 million from the bank to buy a cow to raise, hoping that it will help to generate income so that she could take him to the hospital.
“I am grateful to my grandmother. She only eats rice with vegetables and some salted aubergine, leaving the fish we have to me. I have been trying to get good marks at school as a way to make her happy,” Hai said in tears.
Catching crabs to earn money
The boy has never seen his grandparents even in photos. “My parents only appear in my imagination. I wish I had a family with parents like my friends. But this will never happen,” he said.
The Vice Headmaster of Binh An Secondary School said Hai is a good student with diligence and a strong will. He expected donors’ support so that the boy could be taken to the hospital for treatment and continue his studies.
He is very interested in natural sciences and dreams of becoming a doctor in the future. Now, he wishes that his fainting spells would stop.
